The billboard that defied Russia’s gay propaganda law

Unlike Melbourne, Russia’s queer community are constantly under threat. As an act of solidarity, we created ‘To Russia With Love’ – an activation inviting Russia’s marginalised queer community to safely join the opening night of The Melbourne Queer Film Festival via Periscope. In the process, we reminded Melburnians just how important the festival is in these conservative times.

But due to Russia’s ‘gay propaganda law’ we couldn’t advertise the festival over there, so we found a way through the back door and placed a Russian billboard in Melbourne and let the internet get it to Russia instead.
